Spelling
At Hasland Junior School we aim to foster a positive learning culture where spelling is valued as a fundamental skill for effective communication. We aim to develop pupils' spelling abilities, building on the knowledge of blending and segmenting phonic sounds learnt at Key Stage 1, enabling them to apply correct spelling conventions of phonetic sounds across a wide range of contexts. In order to achieve this, we equip all pupils with strategies and techniques for independent spelling and effective proofreading.
Spellings are aligned to year group expectations outlined in the scheme of work, Sounds and Syllables, allowing for time for revision and building upon prior knowledge and skills. There is an explicit focus on high-frequency words, cross-circular spelling and commonly misspelled words, all delivered through purposeful spelling activities, such as dictation, guided spelling sessions and independent investigations.
We are aware that not all children progress at the same speed within the learning of spelling, therefore we deliver intervention groups, which cater to pupils' individual needs and abilities, focusing on differentiated spelling lists and resources from the Sounds Write phonics scheme and SNIP spelling scheme. We provide opportunities for parents and carers to support their child's spelling development at home, by providing word lists and encouraging regular practice.
