'Reach for the moon and even if you miss,
you will land amongst the stars.'

Reading poetry aloud and reciting poems by heart are crucial components in order to develop children’s spoken language skills.  In our guided reading sessions, we take a look at a wide variety of different styles of poems and a diverse selection of poets (see poetry overview).

Poetry overview

Poetry at Key Stage 2 involves children reading, writing, and performing a variety of poetic forms to develop language skills, creativity, and confidence. Key activities include analysing how a variety of established poets use rhythm, rhyme, and imagery, as well as experimenting with different writing styles like free verse, sonnets, list poems, limericks, haikus and calligrams.

We thoroughly enjoyed our poetry day with AS Creatives who led a number of workshops throughout the day to celebrate the concept of showing ‘respect’ towards each other.  The class’ poems were then published creatively by the company.
