Design & Technology

Design and technology gives young people the skills and abilities to engage positively with the designed and made world and to harness the benefits of technology.  At Hasland Junior School, children learn how products and systems are designed and manufactured, how to be innovative and to make creative use of a variety of resources to improve the world around them.

At Hasland Junior School, we follow a series of carefully planned, focused lessons that culminate in a design and make task. Every year, children have an opportunity to complete three units: textiles, food technology and construction. We encourage children to work as designers by using an iterative cycle of research, design, make and evaluate. Children constantly reflect and evaluate their products and designs against these 6 principles of DT: user, purpose, functionality, innovation, design decisions and authenticity. We support children in making their own design decisions and they are given increasing freedom to make their own choices as they progress from year 3 to year 6. Teachers support children in developing skills that allow them to make these choices and work safely with a wide range of equipment.
